Preparing to Wash

Detangling

Before even stepping into the shower, it’s crucial to gently detangle your hair to make washing easier and prevent any snagging or pulling that can stress your extensions. I start by using a wet brush, beginning from the ends and slowly working my way up to the roots. This careful approach helps manage tangles without damaging the extensions.

Choosing the Right Extensions

It's important to note that the type of extensions you have can affect how you care for them. I use natural beaded row hair extensions, also known as "brakeless soin" extensions, which are quite durable and allow for more thorough washing.

Washing

Selecting Shampoo and Conditioner

For shampoo, I use Olaplex No. 4—a little goes a long way, and it’s excellent for ensuring your scalp and hair are thoroughly clean without stripping moisture. Since my hair gets greasy, I sometimes need an extra amount to create a good lather.

Pro Tip:When shampooing with extensions, use horizontal hand movements to clean between the wefts effectively.

For conditioning, I switch it up with a nourishing hair mask instead of regular conditioner, applying it from mid-lengths to ends. Any residue left on my hands goes lightly over the top and underneath the more damaged sections.

Rinse and Dry

After letting the mask sit for about 5-10 minutes while I finish my shower routine, I rinse it out. Post-shower, I towel-dry my hair to remove excess moisture, being extra gentle on the extensions.

Post-Wash Care

Detangling and Priming

Once out of the shower, I apply a primer (I'm currently loving the one from Oribe called "Run Through") which helps with detangling and also offers heat and UV protection. This step is crucial for preventing damage during styling.

Applying Treatments

For those with thin or damaged hair, consider using a scalp treatment like the Oribe Serene Scalp thickening treatment. I apply this directly to my scalp and gently massage it in, which promotes hair growth and thickness.

Drying

I let my hair air dry to about 75-80% before I even think about using heat. This reduces the amount of heat exposure and helps preserve the health of your hair and extensions.

Styling

Blow-Drying

Before blow-drying, I apply a lightweight styling cream (Oribe's Feather Balm) to add shine and manage frizz. When drying, I start with the lower sections, using a large brush to smooth out the hair, and carefully work around the extensions.

Beginner Tip:If you're new to blow-drying, consider using a tool like the Revlon blow-dry brush for easier styling.

Final Touches

Once my hair is dry, I do a quick pass with my fingers at the roots to ensure everything is completely dry. If needed, a small amount of oil can be applied to the ends for extra shine, but since I wash weekly, I usually skip additional products.

And there you have it! That’s my complete routine for washing and styling hair with extensions. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to the world of extensions, I hope you found these tips helpful.
